Getting Started

Tap the Students tab, then tap the + button in the top-right corner. Fill in the student's first name, last name, optional display name, and class group. Tap Save.

You can also import a full roster from an Excel (.xlsx) file via the Import / Export section in Settings. See the Excel import FAQ below for the required column format.

The Quick Log tab shows all active students for the current date. Tap a student's card to cycle through attendance statuses: Present → Late → Absent → Excused → Remote. The color ring around the student avatar updates to reflect their status.

Points are automatically awarded based on your default settings (configured in Settings → Defaults). You can adjust individual points after logging via the student detail screen.

Stars are a higher-level reward unit. By default, 10 points = 1 star. When a student's total points reach a multiple of 10, their star count updates automatically.

You can change the conversion rate in Settings → Points per Star. You can also manually award or deduct both points and stars from any student's detail page.

Use stars as a classroom-level reward milestone — for example, 5 stars earns a homework pass. Use points for day-to-day positive behavior tracking.

Attendance & Points

Yes. Go to a student's detail screen (tap their name from the Students tab or Quick Log), then scroll to the Attendance History section. Tap any record to view it; swipe left to delete it.

To change a status for today, tap the student's card in Quick Log again — each tap cycles to the next status.

Open the student's detail page, then tap the Adjust Points button (the ± icon). You can:

  • Type a specific number directly into the field
  • Tap the quick-add buttons: +1, +2, +5
  • Tap the menu to access −1 (quick deduct)

Add an optional reason note, then tap Apply. The transaction is logged in the student's point history.

Date-Only (default) records only the date of each attendance entry — useful for simple daily attendance where the exact time doesn't matter.

Date + Time records the precise timestamp — useful for period-based or multi-session logging where you need to track which period a student was present or absent.

You can change the default in Settings → Default Log Mode, or override it per-entry when logging.

Exam Scores

Tap the Exams tab, then tap +. Choose either:

  • Add Single Score — enter one student's score for a specific exam
  • Batch Entry — enter scores for all students at once for the same exam

You can also edit any existing score by tapping the exam in the Exams list, then tapping the pencil icon next to any student's score.

Percentage = (Score Earned ÷ Max Score) × 100, rounded to two decimal places. The Max Score defaults to 100 but you can set it to any value when entering a score.

The grade label (A, B, C, etc.) is calculated automatically based on standard thresholds but can be overridden manually.

Excel Import & Export

Go to Settings → Import / Export → Export to Excel. The app generates an .xlsx workbook with separate sheets for Students, Attendance, PointTransactions, ExamScores, Settings, and ImportLog.

The file is saved to your device's Files app (in the Class Stars folder) and can be shared to any app that accepts Excel files (Numbers, Excel for iOS, email, AirDrop, etc.).

Replace All — deletes all existing data and replaces it entirely with the contents of the imported workbook. Use this for a clean restore from a backup.

Merge by ID — adds new records from the workbook that don't already exist in the app (matched by Student ID, Record ID, Transaction ID, or Score ID). Existing records are not modified. Use this to import a workbook that contains new data alongside records already in the app — for example, adding scores you edited in Numbers without duplicating anything.

💡

Tip: Export first, make changes in Numbers/Excel, then import back using Merge by ID to apply only the changes. If you changed a score that already exists, delete the old record in the app before re-importing.

The only required column is StudentID. All other columns are optional but recommended:

  • StudentID — unique identifier (required)
  • FirstName, LastName, DisplayName
  • ClassGroup — e.g. "Class A", "Period 3"
  • IsActive — 1 (active) or 0 (inactive)
  • Notes — freeform text

Use the Export function first to see the exact column layout the app expects.

iCloud & Data

This can happen if iCloud is temporarily unavailable or the iCloud container hasn't been registered yet. The app will automatically fall back to local storage on the next launch.

If the crash persists:

  • Force-quit the app and relaunch it
  • Make sure you're signed into iCloud in Settings → [Your Name]
  • Try disabling iCloud for Class Stars temporarily: Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Class Stars → toggle off, then relaunch
  • If all else fails, delete and reinstall the app (this clears the local data store and lets the app start fresh)

If the issue continues, please email us with your iOS version and device model.

Yes — if you're signed into the same iCloud account on both devices and iCloud is enabled for Class Stars, your data will sync automatically via Apple's CloudKit. Changes made on one device appear on the other within a few seconds (when both are online).

If sync seems delayed, open the app on both devices and wait a moment — CloudKit sync can take up to a minute on first sync or after a period offline.

Go to Settings → Import / Export → Reset All Data. This permanently deletes all students, attendance, point transactions, exam scores, and import history from the app and from iCloud (if sync is enabled).

Alternatively, deleting the app from your device removes all locally stored data.
